> Third, in "At that time the great earth..." onward, within the summons by earth-quaking, there are land quakes and water quakes. Water and earth depend on each other, and therefore both quake, symbolizing that ignorance and craving/views mutually depend on each other; about to overturn the delusion and craving of conditioned existence, the earth quakes to symbolize this. Further, saying "trembled" (zhen): rising, surging, and moving are its visible forms; trembling, roaring, and waking are its sounds; in full, there are the six quakes and eighteen quakes (and so forth). However, sound, light, quaking, and so on are either earlier, later, or simultaneous; since the capacities and perceptions are not the same, how could one hold to a fixed view?
