> From "How is having heard much fulfilled?" onwards, he explains the fifth chapter, and the text has five parts: the first is based on the text and words, and the latter four are based on the doctrinal principles. The twelve divisions of scripture have many words while their meanings are diffuse; the Buddha's summary has few words while its meaning is essential, and because the meaning is essential, it constitutes having heard much. Furthermore, removing the twelve divisions, leaving only this nirvāṇa, does not mean that the principle of nirvāṇa lies outside the twelve; it precisely means that the text and words of the twelve are vast and extensive, and setting aside the broad to take up the concise preserves the principle within, which is precisely having heard much—why must it reside in words? Therefore, further setting aside the entirety, one takes only four verses; again setting aside the four verses, one takes only the permanently abiding; and again setting aside the permanently abiding, one takes quiescence. Hence we know that diminishing it and further diminishing it leads ultimately to the unconditioned; one merely values its principle as having heard much, not taking extensive words as having heard much.
