> First, Master Daliang explained that nirvāṇa cannot be translated. He said: “Nirvāṇa is the ultimate designation of the Tathāgata’s spiritual powers, the collective name for permanence, bliss, and the eight flavors. Nirvāṇa is the name of a different vernacular; names have regional dialects, and appearing mutually earlier and later there are three names. Nirvāṇa is precisely the sound of Central India; its name contains manifold meanings, and this country has no single name with which to translate it, so its foreign original is preserved.” This extends from Hexi as far as Daji, all sharing this explanation.
