> The Commentary states: This reveals the ability to eliminate obstacles to meritorious karma of the nature of cultivation. It also has three sections: first, the section revealing the intrinsic nature of the obstacle, as the sūtra states, 'stingy, greedy, jealous, praising oneself and disparaging others.' Here, stinginess and greed can obstruct the cultivation of loving-kindness (maitrī), because one does not bestow joy. Jealousy obstructs sympathetic joy (muditā), because one does not rejoice along with others. Praising oneself and disparaging others obstructs compassion (karuṇā), because it can cause distress and injury. All three generally obstruct the nature of equanimity (upekṣā), because they are defiled. This is stated in an expedient order, so there is no contradiction. Second, the section showing the faults of the obstacle is as the sūtra states, 'falling into the three evil destinies and enduring suffering.' Third, the section on the supreme benefits of hearing \[the name of\] the Buddha is as the sūtra states, 'up to forever shattering the four kinds of māras.' This is easily understood from the text.
