> The eulogy states: In Sanskrit, it is Mañjuśrī, translated here as Wondrous Auspiciousness (Miaojixiang). 'Wenshushili' is a phonetic corruption. The Aṅgulimālīya Sūtra states: In the northern realm of Constant Joy, he is the Buddha Joy-Treasury Mani-Jewel Accumulation. Whoever hears his name, pays homage, and takes refuge, in their various undertakings, the Bodhisattva is able to bring about auspiciousness for them. His divine function is peerless, hence he is named Wondrous Auspiciousness. As for 'Dharma Prince': having long ago been due to realize awakening, he treads the causal stage, succeeding to the consecrated lineage as the Buddha's crown prince; thus he alone is marked with the title 'Dharma Prince'. He was also accompanied by his retinue of five hundred bodhisattvas. The backgrounds of these two are as explained in the sūtras. The former is the assembly of great wisdom, the latter is the assembly of great compassion; the former is the assembly of present noble ones, the latter is the assembly of past noble ones; the former is the assembly of the ten grounds, the latter is the assembly of those succeeding to the throne—therefore they are called the two assemblies. The Treatise on the Lotus Sūtra says: 'Bhadrapāla and the sixteen others have variable deportment and possess various practices, hence they are specifically marked here.' Why are the śrāvakas listed first and the bodhisattvas revealed later? Because the śrāvakas and their kind share the appearance of the Buddha and, in their monastic deportment, constantly stay close to the Buddha; and in order to cause the bodhisattvas to generate reverence toward the śrāvaka assembly and abandon arrogance.
