> The Commentary says: Challenging concerning purity or impurity. Having adopted the monastic robes and cast off adornments, in appearance he has gone forth and constantly displays dignified deportment, yet does not cultivate dhyāna concentration. Receiving the fine robes from his maternal aunt, sensual craving was not yet discarded; looking upon the urṇā-light and not recognising it, he still possessed ignorance. The Buddha prophesied the perfection of the fruit, the principle of which is profound and difficult to fathom; when his life ends, in what direction will his place of birth be, pure or impure? It is simply because a bodhisattva, without arising from the concentration of cessation, displays dignified deportment; being about to succeed the Dharma King, he thereupon accepted the golden brocade; yielding and resigning the seat of light, he equally inquired about the light of the ūrṇā. Upāli did not understand, and momentarily considered him to lack concentration. With coarse perceptions viewing outer appearances, he genuinely suspected there was delusion. There are nine dhyāna concentrations and ten afflictions, as explained elsewhere. Moreover, prior to attaining Buddhahood, one must certainly be in Tuṣita bound to one last birth; the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna are identical on this. Upāli, harbouring his own inferior mindset, rashly measured the higher state, manifesting ignorance so as to initiate the present request.
