> Regarding the second, explaining the causes cultivated: although causes in various sūtras and treatises are numerous, now, provisionally relying on this sūtra to explain the causes for that heaven, there are briefly five kinds: First, the cause of renunciation and giving, meaning that upon hearing this bodhisattva’s name, making and erecting images, sweeping stupas and smearing the ground, making various offerings of incense, flowers, banners, and so forth, making vows wishing to be born, one attains rebirth. Second, the cause of preventing transgressions, meaning receiving the eight purification precepts for the duration of a single thought-moment and cultivating various good karmas, from one day up to seven days, making vows, one attains rebirth. Third, the cause of leaving distraction, meaning tying mindfulness, practicing various samādhis, recollecting the Buddha's form and image, and making vows, one attains rebirth. Fourth, the cause of selecting the unerroneous, meaning reading and reciting scriptures, reciting Maitreya’s name, and making vows, one attains rebirth. Fifth, the cause of purifying the heavy, meaning that after the Buddha’s parinirvāṇa, disciples of the four assemblies hearing Maitreya’s name, making vows and paying homage—such a person at the end of life attains rebirth in the snap of a fingers. If according with the treatises, there are five gates: First, the gate of worship, paying homage according to the name to the bodhisattva bound to one \[more\] birth to seek rebirth in heaven. Second, the gate of praise, with utmost sincerity praising the wisdom-light of the bodhisattva bound to one \[more\] birth to seek rebirth in heaven. Third, the gate of making vows, making vows wishing to be born in that heaven, so that one accomplishes what is practiced by bodhisattvas. Fourth, the gate of observation, observing the meritorious adornments in that heaven, the meritorious adornments of that bodhisattva, and the meritorious adornments of the heavenly retinue. Fifth, the gate of dedication, not abandoning sentient beings, dedicating the merit produced to all living beings to be born together in heaven. If one uses these five gates to support the previous five causes, one will definitely be born in that heaven.
