> Question: Places have the distinction of pure and defiled, yet are definitively stated according to capacities; so too could the time understood by ordinary persons and noble ones \[be stated\]. How could it be permissible not to state it definitively? Answer: The purity and defilement of places can be definitively known, but time has indeterminacy of length; therefore it cannot be taken as a standard, meaning that according to sharp or dull \[capacities\], long periods and short periods are indeterminate. Since Ānanda was born on the night of the Buddha's attainment of the Way, and only entered as transmitter thirty years later, yet all sūtras say 'at one time', it is because when the transmitter entered, it was spoken again for him upon request; thus there is no error in saying 'at one time'.
