- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.216](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1775.1.216)

> \[Kumāra\]jīva says: In the language of Qin, this means 'noble persons'; it also means 'nimble and fleet.' There are three kinds: first, those on the earth; second, those in space; third, deva yakṣas. Earth yakṣas made gifts only of wealth, hence they cannot fly in the air. Deva yakṣas made gifts of carriages and horses, hence they can fly. When the Buddha turned the wheel of the Dharma, the earth yakṣas proclaimed it and the space yakṣas heard it; the space yakṣas proclaimed it and the Four Heavenly Kings heard it; and so on up to the Brahmā heaven.
> \[Seng\]zhao says: Yakṣa in the language of Qin means 'nimble and fleet.' There are three kinds: first, those on earth; second, those in space; third, deva yakṣas, who dwell in the lower two heavens, guarding the celestial cities, moats, gates, and towers.
