- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.256](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1775.1.256)

> \[Kumāra\]jīva says: The face is the top of the body, and the eyes are the hallmark of the face; hence the praise of physical form begins with the eyes. Furthermore, the Buddha views sentient beings with eyes of compassion equally, and because he esteems this equality, he praises them.
> \[Seng\]zhao says: Of the five senses and hundred bones, the eyes are the foremost; gazing upon his countenance, he composed this, hence he first praises the eyes. In India there is a blue lotus flower whose petals are long and broad, with the blue and white distinctly demarcated, possessing the mark of the eyes of a great man; hence it is used as a metaphor.
