- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.40](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1775.1.40)

> \[Kumāra\]jīva says: Benefiting is of two kinds: either in this life or in future lives. Ordinary beings interact for profit, and so they act only after being invited. Sages respond with compassion, and so they go without being implored. When they go, they are sure to be intimate with them, and being intimate, they are sure to protect them; thus it says, "uninvited friends to the multitude, they bring them peace." \[Seng\]zhao says: A true friend does not wait to be invited, like a compassionate mother rushing to her infant.
