- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.44](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1775.1.44)

> \[Kumāra\]jīva says: "Māra" refers to the four māras. Attaining the forbearance of non-arising, defilements are permanently severed, thereby subduing the defilement-māra. Attaining the dharmakāya, one no longer receives a corporeal body, thereby subduing the skandha-māra. Without a body, there is no death, thereby subduing the death-māra. Free of these three māras, Pāpīyān finds no opportunity, thereby subduing the deva-māra. Subduing heterodox teachers is like causing Śāriputra to debate with heterodox teachers for seven days and seven nights, and then winning the victory. This is of that kind. \[Seng\]zhao says: "Māra" refers to the four māras. "Heterodox teachers" refers to the ninety-six kinds of heterodox paths.
