- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.474](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1775.1.474)

> \[Kumāra\]jīva says: If purity and defilement were brought about purely by their own sins and merits, one could not speak of 'manifesting' it. Yet saying 'manifesting it' has the meaning of display. The Buddhas are able to manifest purity and conceal impurity for sentient beings; but if they manifest purity and conceal impurity, it does not benefit sentient beings. Leaving it be without concealing it has the meaning of manifesting identity. / \[Seng\]zhao says: From the Buddha's perspective, it is constantly pure like this; outwardly responding to the base and inferior, its impurity is identical to theirs. / \[Dao\]sheng says: Since it says 'identical', it is no different from them; bending down to accommodate the base and inferior, he therefore manifests it as if impure.
