- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.476](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1775.1.476)

> \[Seng\]zhao says: When newly born devas wish to test and know the extent of their merits together, they must eat heavenly food together from a single jewelled vessel. Heavenly food is extremely white, so white that nothing can compare. For one who has much merit, when they lift the food to their mouth, the colour of the food does not change; if one has little merit, when they lift it to their mouth, the colour of the food changes. In the vessel, the colour is one; in their hands, it differs. How could the food differ? The difference comes from the devas themselves. The differences of the buddha-land can be understood by analogy. / \[Dao\]sheng says: This is an analogy for the Brahma King and Śāriputra. When the mind of wisdom is bright and pure, one sees the adornment of merits; grasping it with a dark mind, one therefore calls it defiled; it is not that the buddha-land is truly so.
