- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [2.146](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1775.2.146)

> \[Kumāra\]jīva says: The earth has no constant master; the strong possess it. The body is also masterless, altering according to circumstance: when sickness arrives it is vexed, when death arrives it is extinguished; its gathering and dispersal follow conditions, without gaining self-mastery. \[Seng\]zhao says: The myriad matters and myriad forms are all composed of the four great elements. Externally they form earth, wood, mountains, and rivers; internally they form the four limbs and hundred members. Gathering, they constitute life; dispersing, they constitute death. Living, they are internal; dead, they are external. Although internal and external differ, their great elements are not distinct; hence, by matching internal and external four elements, he illuminates non-self. Like the external earth, passed down from antiquity to the present, whoever is strong first resides upon it; hence it has no master. The body is just like this: composed of myriad conditions, it arises when conditions combine and separates when conditions disperse. How could there be a true ruler constantly mastering it? 'Master', 'life-span', and 'person' are four designations established for the single concept of a self.
