Yet Maudgalyāyana, failing to perceive their faculties, expounded the Dharma according to ordinary convention, first awakening the householders with the seven items of giving and morality. When the householders heard that giving and morality result in birth in the heavens and enjoying blessings, they gave rise to the notion of a sentient being. Having given rise to the notion of a sentient being, they then falsely produced various characteristics with respect to all dharmas.
