- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [3.47](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1775.3.47)

> \[Kumāra\]jīva says: Nigaṇṭha was his personal name; Nātaputta was his mother's name. This man gave rise to the view that transgression and merit, suffering and pleasure, all stem from previous lifetimes and must inevitably be repaid; although one may practice the path now, one cannot cut them off halfway. These six masters all gave rise to false views, went naked, practiced austerities, and proclaimed themselves omniscient; they were largely the same, differing only in minor points. In all, there are three types of the six masters, making eighteen schools: the first proclaims omniscience, the second attains the five supernatural powers, and the third recites the four Vedas. The six masters expounded above belong to the first class. \[Seng\]zhao says: Nigaṇṭha is the general designation for their homeless renunciants, just as in the Buddha's teaching the renunciant is called a śramaṇa. Nātaputta was his mother's name. This man asserted that transgression and merit, suffering and pleasure, originally have fixed causes and must inevitably be experienced, and are not something that practicing the path can sever. Before the Buddha appeared in the world, the six masters all reigned as kings of doctrine in India.
