- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [4.166](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1775.4.166)

> \[Kumāra\]jīva says: If one possesses life yet cannot practice the Way, it is no different from the life of birds and beasts. If presently one can disregard body and life to cultivate what is good, then the life obtained in a future existence will surely be able to cultivate goodness and practice the Way; this is called a purified life, not living merely to live. \[Seng\]zhao says: 'Steadfast dharmas' refers to the three steadfast dharmas: body, life, and wealth. If one forgets body and life and abandons wealth, casting aside fetters and entanglements to cultivate the Way, one will surely obtain a boundless body, inexhaustible life, and limitless wealth. These three are not consumed even when heaven and earth are burned, and do not end even when kalpas conclude; hence they are named 'steadfast dharmas.' Because the heavenly sovereign delights in and is attached to the five desires without thinking of impermanence, he exhorts him to cultivate steadfast dharmas. \[Dao\]sheng says: This refers to seeking the fundamental roots of goodness. Since the body is impermanent, one should deploy it to do good. Since life is precarious and fragile, one should exhaust it in practicing the Way. Since wealth is subject to the five houses, one should use it for giving. These cannot be destroyed by impermanence; they are called 'steadfast dharmas.'
