> \[Dao\]sheng says: The existence of defilements arises merely from deluded sentiments; one should immediately contemplate the principle of dharmas to dispel them. However, when first contemplating, one's vision of the principle is not yet clear and the mind does not abide in the principle; one must rely on the power of mindfulness before contemplation can be attained. Mindfulness functions by not forgetting, and thus contemplation can be maintained. Another edition reads 'right remembrance.' \[Kumāra\]jīva says: Right remembrance encompasses beginning and end, and combines the subtle and coarse; generally, whatever is not false thinking and does not deviate from principle is called remembrance.
