### [9.118](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1775.9.118)

> \[Kumāra\]jīva says: When a firm wholesome mind is deep and unshakeable, only then is it called a 'root'. For example, a person came to Śāriputra asking to go forth as a monk. Śāriputra examined his past lives and found that across eighty thousand great kalpas he had not planted any wholesome roots, so he rejected him and did not deliver him. \[The man\] went to five hundred disciples, and none of them would accept him. Thereupon he went to the gate of the Jetavana, weeping and deeply distressed. When the Buddha returned from outside, he saw him and questioned him. The man answered explaining the situation in full. The Buddha then rebuked Śāriputra in various ways: 'Is your wisdom not deep enough to see a person's roots, so that you wrongly look down upon him?' The Buddha then received the man, praising him with the words: 'Welcome, monk (ehi bhikṣu).' His hair and beard fell off naturally, the Dharma robes came onto his body, and he immediately became a śramaṇa; the Buddha expounded the Dharma for him, and he attained arhatship on the spot. Śāriputra asked the Buddha: 'When did this person plant the wholesome root for nirvāṇa?' The Buddha said: 'Countless kalpas ago in the distant past, there was a buddha named Renke (Mānavottama?). At that time, a man went into a forest to gather firewood. A tiger came out of the woods wanting to devour him. The man climbed up a tree, while the tiger stayed beneath the tree, causing the man immense terror. At that moment, the Buddha flew across the sky; having seen him, the man uttered "Homage to the Buddha" (namo buddhāya). His mind gave rise to faith and joy, he grew intensely weary of saṃsāra, and made a solemn vow from the depth of his mind, wishing to be free from this suffering. Because of this wholesome root, he has now attained liberation.' Thereupon Śāriputra repented before the Buddha, prostrating his entire body on the ground and sighing deeply in lamentation. The Buddha said: 'It is just like gold in an ore: foolish people, not knowing it, cast it away and do not take it. A goldsmith sees it, knows that there is gold within, and blows on it with two bellows to bring it out. Inside the stone of sentient beings' ignorance is the gold of wisdom; now, because your wisdom is not deep, you cast him away and did not deliver him. The Tathāgata deeply perceives the root and brings it out using the bellows of dhyāna-concentration and wisdom.'
