- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [9.32](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1775.9.32)

> \[Kumāra\]jīva says: Supernatural transformations and preaching the Dharma to deliver people are the common methods of converting. Rice originally only nourishes the physical body, yet now they attain the Path through it; thus he exclaims that it is unprecedented. A buddha takes converting people as his work; whatever converts people is all called 'the work of a buddha.' Because Ānanda thought that the wonders of a buddha's work were exhausted in this, \[the Buddha\] below extensively explains the work of a buddha in order to broaden his mind. \[Seng\]zhao says: Rice originally only nourishes the physical body, yet it removes defilements and fetters; this had never been heard or seen before. \[Dao\]sheng says: A buddha takes eliciting awakening as his work, and the fragrant rice can do this; thus it is unprecedented.
