> Question: An impure land is brought about by the own-karma of sentient beings; what does it have to do with the Buddha's work, such that it is said that in order to liberate them he shows an impure land? Explanation: Sentient beings seeing defilement or seeing purity indeed arises from their own karma; nevertheless, what they see is seen in the Buddha-land. This is truly because the Buddha-land is pure, wondrous, and unimpeded, able to manifest various characteristics in accordance with sentient beings, just as a pure, wondrous jewel can manifest various colors in accordance with various conditions. The Buddha-land conforms to conditions and causes people to see differently; therefore it is said that for the sake of liberating inferior people, he shows an impure land.
