> From here, the third \[part\] explains that Vimalakīrti subdued Māra, demanded the women, and transformed and benefited \[them\] with the Dharma. In this there are two: first, demanding the women from Māra; second, from "Thereupon Pāpīyān said to the maidens" downward, returning the women to Māra. Previously, in demanding the women, he instructed them in the correct Dharma; in the latter section, returning the women, he made them transmit the correct Dharma. Moreover, previously, demanding the women was transforming them to cultivate their own benefit; in the latter section, returning the women was teaching them to cultivate the benefit of others. Furthermore, the previous section transformed and benefited the heavenly maidens; the latter section returned the women to convert the other deities in turn. In the first part there are five: 1. Demanding the women from Māra. "These maidens may be given to me, as I am one who may receive them": "May be given to me" clarifies that Māra should give them; "as I am one who may receive them" clarifies that he himself may receive them. Vimalakīrti is a layperson, and therefore he may receive women. 2. Māra hears this and will not give them. In this, first inwardly he is terrified; next, "he thought: 'Will Vimalakīrti not torment me?'" Snatching his women and forcibly detaining them is called "tormenting me." Then he wished to make his form invisible, but Vimalakīrti constrained him, "and he could not become invisible." Below, he further exerted all his strength, but Vimalakīrti constrained him, "nor could he leave." 3. A voice from the sky urges him to relinquish them. "Immediately he heard a voice from the sky" is a general indication. Whose voice is this? It should also be uttered by Vimalakīrti. "Pāpīyān, give the women to him, and you will be able to leave" directly urges him to relinquish the women. 4. Māra, in fear, gives up the women. Fearing that Vimalakīrti's supernormal power would constrain him so that he could never leave, it says "out of fear." Begrudgingly and under compulsion relinquishing them is called "reluctantly giving them." 5. Vimalakīrti obtains the women and transforms and benefits them with the Dharma.
