> From here below is the second part, concluding with praise to reveal supremacy. 'Mañjuśrī, this is how a sick bodhisattva subdues his mind' concludes the preceding cultivation of wisdom. 'In order to sever old age...' and so on praises the preceding cultivation of compassion. Within this, there is first the dharma, next the metaphor, and finally the application. In the dharma, 'in order to sever the suffering of old age, illness, and death is the bodhisattva's bodhi' is direct praise. Only when one severs suffering for the sake of beings can it be called the correct path of a bodhisattva; therefore it is called the bodhisattva's bodhi. 'If it were not so, what one cultivates and treats would be without benefit' is inverse praise. Inability to rescue and benefit others with the path is called being without benefit. In the metaphor, 'vanquishing an enemy is being valiant' means that only when one eliminates enemies for others is it called great valor. Alternatively, sentient beings are those dear to the bodhisattva; the afflictions of sentient beings are precisely the bodhisattva's enemies, and subduing these enemies is great valor. In the application, 'also eliminating \[them for others is what\] a bodhisattva is called' means that only when one also eliminates old age, illness, and death for others does one attain the title of bodhisattva.
