> Question: Why must one be taught to abandon what is pure and good? There are three dharma gates: the first is the gate of cultivating and abandoning as an antidote, where whatever is bad is abandoned and whatever is good is cultivated; the second is the gate of refuting characteristics, where whether good or bad, all alike are eliminated; the third is the gate of establishing characteristics, where both pure and defiled arise. Now, it is according to the second \[gate\], and therefore he teaches the abandonment of both the defiled and the pure.
