### [2.21](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1777.2.21)

> First, explaining the three bodies in terms of phenomena: first, the dharma-body; second, the reward-body; third, the responsive body. First, the meaning of "pure" is the dharma-body: its own-nature is pure, luminous, and without blemish; this is the intrinsically pure dharma-body. Second, "undefiled" is the reward-body: reward-wisdom is fully luminous, free from defiling taints; this is the completely pure reward-body. Third, "fame" is the responsive body: with great compassion converting the world, its name and renown universally spread; this is the responsive body. Hence the Dazhidulun states: "When quicksilver blends with genuine gold, it can reflect all visible forms; when meritorious qualities blend with the dharma-body, it responds and manifests everywhere, going to all places." Yet the meaning of the three bodies is completely present throughout various sūtras. Although the principle is fully evident, the names are not clearly manifested. As in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra, the names and meanings of the three buddhas are completely present; furthermore, the Samantabhadra Contemplation Sūtra says, "The three kinds of bodies of the Buddha are born from the Vaipulya." The meaning clarified by the three bodies does not contradict the two bodies: if one recognizes their opening and merging, how could one fixate on using one exclusively! This is of the same category as the opening and merging of the three truths and the two truths. Using these two translations to explain the names in correspondence with their meanings, the intent can be seen.
