> Answer: Sentient beings have two kinds of proclivities: dull proclivities are coarse and belong to craving, which is the work of Māra; sharp proclivities are subtle and belong to views, which is the work of non-Buddhists; hence craving came first and views second. Now, in the true path of the Buddhadharma, one severs defilements by taking the principle as object. On the path of vision, there are two kinds of persons: dull persons enter the path of vision through the practices of impermanence and suffering, severing craving first; sharp persons enter the principle of vision through the practices of emptiness and non-self, severing views. With views entirely exhausted beforehand, the path of cultivation comes afterward, and the fetters of craving are eliminated next.
