> The Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra explains that Śāriputra asked Subhūti: "Does arising arise, or does non-arising arise?" Subhūti replied: "It is not that arising arises, nor is it that non-arising arises." This refutes the three provisionalities of the view of arising, comprising twelve contemplation gates in total. If, contemplating the arising and non-arising of the three provisionalities, one clings to non-arising, one again uses twelve contemplations to refute it. Refuting the view of both arising and non-arising also has twelve contemplations; refuting the view of neither arising nor non-arising likewise has twelve refutations. Combining the refutations of the four views, there are forty-eight contemplations in all. Since the refuting mind corresponds to what is refuted, refuting the contemplating mind also has forty-eight rounds. Combining the refuting and the refuted, there are ninety-six contemplation gates in total. By skillfully cultivating this contemplation, one contemplates that the characteristics of arising are ultimately ungraspable, and further, compound four views, complete four views, and ineffable views are all ungraspable. One suddenly opens into awakening: the sixty-two views and the eighty-eight entangling afflictions are all extinguished, and one attains \[the stage of\] srotāpanna. Therefore, the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra says: "Whether it be the knowledge or the abandonment of the srotāpanna, this is the bodhisattva's anutpattika-dharma-kṣānti." This is skillful crossing over, abandoning without abandoning, unlike the definitive abandoning of clumsy crossing over.
