> Sixth, distinguishing origin and trace in terms of contemplating the mind: suppose someone learns the perfect contemplation of the middle way, contemplating the source of the mind. When the path of contemplation is thoroughly matured, it is also manifested within the trace without obstruction; their practice is perfect and their preaching is perfect, phenomena and principle corresponding—this is "both origin and trace are higher." If one's inner mind learns perfectly while one's trace shows what is biased or deviant, this is "origin is higher and trace is lower." If one's inner mind does not truly learn perfect contemplation, but manifests the mark of being unhindered, this is "origin is lower and trace is higher." If one's original mind merely practices entering emptiness, while one's trace manifests the mark of breaking through the provisional, this is "both origin and trace are lower." Using this to evaluate study of the Buddha Dharma, seated meditation, and the higher and lower states of mind of all practitioners, as well as the successes and failures in self-cultivation and transforming others, one fully makes a distinction with four propositions: 1. Both origin and trace are higher: this is a person of real practice; 2. Origin is higher and trace is lower: this is a person of secret practice; 3. Origin is lower and trace is higher: this is an arrogant person, unless it is done for the sake of the Buddha Dharma to benefit living beings; 4. Both origin and trace are lower: this is also a person of real practice.
