> Answer: Across the forty-two grounds, quiescence and illumination are identical, yet the degrees to which ignorance is exhausted differ by rank; hence, when a lower ground has not yet exhausted a certain rank, it cannot know a higher ground; when a higher ground has exhausted that rank, it can know the lower ground. The two vehicles and even ordinary persons all possess this inconceivable principle, but covered by the obstacles of delusion through deliberation and discrimination, having not broken through the recollection and discrimination of ignorance, they cannot know without deliberation; the buddhas and bodhisattvas have broken through the recollection and discrimination of ignorance, and therefore know without deliberation. For example, when the crescent moon ascends into the sky, it forms no thought: 'I illuminate the world and illuminate sentient beings'; yet sentient beings and the world are naturally illuminated and revealed. When it reaches the fifteenth day, the time of the full moon, it likewise does not think: 'I illuminate, and that is revealed.' The buddhas and bodhisattvas explained in the perfect teaching are also like this; how could they be like a lamp's light?
