> First, differentiating the function of the provisional and the ultimate: Some people exclusively use unfathomable expedient skill as the function; this explanation of the function is one-sided. We now state that both the provisional and the ultimate can serve as the function. Why is this so? In terms of the path beyond words, neither the provisional nor the ultimate can be spoken of; yet due to causes and conditions, both can be spoken of. If speaking of the provisional brings benefit, the provisional is the function; if speaking of the ultimate brings beings to awakening, the ultimate is the function. Therefore, both can serve as the function of this sūtra.
