> Second, clarifying how the provisional and the ultimate differ across the various teachings: The Avataṃsaka possesses two teachings: the distinctive teaching is provisional, and the perfect teaching is ultimate. The Tripiṭaka is purely provisional, guiding beings toward the conjured city. The Vaipulya is fully equipped with four teachings: three provisional and one ultimate. The Prajñā discards the Tripiṭaka and has only three teachings: two provisional and one ultimate. The Lotus \[Sūtra\] directly casts aside expedient means and has only the one ultimate. The Nirvāṇa \[Sūtra\] fully explains four teachings: on the causal stage, three are provisional and one is ultimate; in discerning the effect, it identically has only the one ultimate.
