For this reason, when the Great Sage established the teachings, their names were not the same, and the modes of expression were also different; hence there are sudden and gradual responses to capacities. For instance, the Avataṃsaka broadly clarifies the stages of bodhisattva practice; the Tripiṭaka exclusively teaches the Lesser Vehicle; the Vaipulya refutes the lesser and reveals the greater; the Pañcaviṃśati runs through dharmas, sweeping them away and unifying them into the central theme; the Lotus gathers up the beginning and the end, opening the provisional and revealing the ultimate; the Nirvāṇa interprets the various sūtras, bringing them all back to the permanent abiding of buddha-nature.
