> Question: In what sūtra or treatise does this appear? Answer: The Renwang \[jing\] says, "The three ranks of worthy ones and the ten ranks of sages dwell in karmic retribution"; one should know that this is taking karmic retribution as a land. The Lotus \[Sūtra\] says, "The Sahā world was flat and even, with those bodhisattvas all dwelling within it." The Dàzhìdù lùn says, "The Buddha of the dharma-nature body expounds the Dharma for dharmakāya bodhisattvas; in that land there are no names of śrāvakas or pratyekabuddhas." The Avataṃsaka explains the world of Indra's net, and the Mahāyānasaṃgraha explains the world of the Flower King; all elucidate the unhindered characteristics of the land of karmic retribution.
