> Fifth, entering the text of the sūtra, with respect to the preface there are two parts: 1. the common, and 2. the specific. First, explaining the six conditions of the common preface. Serving as the preface for all sūtras, it must be explained in two meanings: 1. general, and 2. specific. First, the general explanation: this is the Buddha teaching Ānanda and other great disciples the characteristics for entering the Buddha Dharma. The Dàzhìdù lùn states: 'When the Buddha was about to enter nirvāṇa, Ānanda had not yet eliminated the bond of affection for his kin, and his mind was submerged in an ocean of grief. Aniruddha said to Ānanda: "If you have doubts regarding future matters, you should inquire and resolve them in time. Why are you submerged in an ocean of grief like a worldly ordinary person?" Ānanda gained the power of mindfulness of the Way, his stupefied mind awakened, and he asked about four matters: First, he asked how to cultivate the Way after the Buddha's nirvāṇa; second, he asked who should serve as teacher; third, he asked how to dwell with the foul-mouthed Chanda; fourth, he asked what words should be placed at the very head of the Buddha's sūtras. The Buddha told Ānanda: "Whether now in the present or after I pass away, cultivate the Way relying on the four stations of mindfulness. The Prātimokṣa Sūtra is your great master. The foul-mouthed Chanda should be dealt with according to the Brahmadaṇḍa method; if his mind becomes pliable and subdued, teach him the Kātyāyanāvavāda Sūtra, and he will attain entrance to the Way. At the beginning of the Dharma treasury that I accumulated over three asaṃkhyeya kalpas, you should speak thus: 'Thus have I heard: at one time the Buddha was in such-and-such a place, in such-and-such a land, together with such-and-such a great assembly.' Not only is my Dharma like this; the beginnings of the sūtras of all buddhas of the three periods of time are also like this."' Therefore, we know that the six conditions are the common preface; it is also called the testamentary preface, because the Tathāgata left his testamentary command that they be placed at the head of sūtras; it is also called the pre-sūtra preface, because before the sūtras of all buddhas of the three periods of time, it is always like this.
