> "I have heard" refers to the Dharma personally heard by Ānanda and the others; hence it says "I have heard." This also has three explanations:
> First, the general explanation: because they personally received the oral transmission. If it were transmitted from hearing it from another, it would often lead to falsity and error. Now, having heard it in person, it is trustworthy, and the multitude receives it with nothing to cause doubt. The Dàzhìdù lùn says: "Following worldly convention, 'I' is spoken; through combination, it is called 'heard.'" "Following worldly convention, 'I' is spoken" means that when a practitioner of learning transmits the Dharma to benefit sentient beings, they conform to convention and say "I," which externally does not violate propriety and internally does not violate reality. It is like using gold coins to buy copper coins: buying and selling is naturally so, and no one finds it strange. "Through combination, it is called 'heard'" means that when the ear faculty is undamaged and attention is directed toward hearing, consciousness and dust combine so that ear consciousness immediately arises, and mental consciousness discriminates the various things heard; because conditions combine, it is called "heard." Internally, Ānanda and the others had sharp ear faculties, and externally, facing the Buddha's eightfold voice, they received and took it in without remainder; hence it is called "I have heard."
