> Question: The Dàzhìdù lùn explains that the Buddha-Dharma is without self; why divide it into four? If it is like this, then there is a self. Answer: If there were definitively a self, how could there be the distinction of the four teachings? If there were definitively no self, how could the scriptural teachings have these different explanations? If one does not allow these distinctions to be made, it not only ruins the Buddha's gates of expedient teaching, but also accords with the doctrines of those who do not believe.
