> Second, next, briefly citing the Buddha's body and wisdom to explain and complete the two kinds of lands. For instance, Śākyamuni is sixteen feet tall, while Maitreya is a thousand cubits up to myriad yoyanas; these are differences in the response body, with short and long according to whether the beings transformed are large or small. If it is the wisdom and severance attained by the Tripiṭaka Buddha of Śākyamuni, who attained the unimpeded wisdom of the fivefold dharmakāya, and the unimpeded wisdom attained by Maitreya, both having eliminated active defilements and residual habits, what difference is there again? The buddhas of the ten directions have one body, one wisdom, powers, and fearlessnesses; what difference is there again? The eternally quiescent Dharma-nature does not differ here; it is merely that the response body manifests short and long forms accordingly, with differences in grade and superiority or inferiority according to conditions; hence there are differences of defilement and purity, sixteen feet and a thousand cubits. Therefore, it is said that body and wisdom are used to explain and complete the defiled and pure lands.
