> "Fragrance" is a name for being free from defilement, and has the function of proclaiming perfume, dispersing sweet odors, and exuding fragrance. Therefore, the Immeasurable Meanings Sūtra says that the wind of the Way and the fragrance of virtue perfume everything. Within the principle, the supreme fragrance of morality, meditation, and wisdom is fragrant without exhaustion; hence it is called fragrance. "Accumulation" has the meaning of gathering together: accumulating all merits to assemble and form the dharmakāya. What has nothing accumulated is called a storehouse. If the chapter is named after the Buddha, he is called Fragrance Accumulation (Gandhahastin / Sugandhakūṭa). If the title is designated after the land, it should be called Multitude of Fragrances (Sarvagandhasugandhā). Now, the title is designated according to the superior person of direct retribution; hence it is called the "Chapter on the Fragrance Accumulation \[Tathāgata\]".
