> Second, from "Furthermore, there are two dharmas \[regarding\] sūtras not yet heard" onward broadly cites faults. Within this there are two parts: first, explaining the two dharmas to elucidate the previous newly learned person's slandering and not approaching; second, explaining the two dharmas to elucidate that the previous long-practicing person should not hold contempt and grasp at signs. Regarding the former slandering and not approaching: here, it is like Bodhisattva Xīgēn, who only spoke the dharma of true reality, elucidating that within all dharmas there is a nature of peace and joy. Shèngyì received the Tripiṭaka dharma, had flawless deportment, and upheld the precepts and dhūta practices. Suddenly hearing what Xīgēn said contradicted his own learning, he was greatly astonished, reviled and slandered it, and refused to receive it in faith, immediately performing the legal procedure to expel Xīgēn. The expulsion was completed, and he immediately entered hell. This is a newly resolved person receiving the expedient teaching, slandering prajñā, and not believing the profound sūtras. Such persons need to know the profound and shallow. Second, there are times when they do not slander this dharma, yet toward the person who upholds the dharma they have no respectful or approachable mind, or at other times they speak of their faults and misdeeds. This too is a mark of loss; neither is a long-practicing person with a tamed mind.
