> From "Why is this?" downward is, second, the direct exhortation. However, there are four dharmakāyas: The Tripiṭaka teaching takes the fivefold \[dharmakāya\] as the dharmakāya, and sometimes it also refers to the true principle of partial emptiness. As in the Saṃyuktāgama and the Dhyāna Sūtra: 'If hindrances are heavy and obstruct dhyāna, one should be mindful of the Buddha's dharmakāya; the dharmakāya is emptiness.' As when the Buddha descended from Trāyastriṃśa and the four assemblies joyfully wished to go forward to see the Buddha, Subhūti sat upright in a stone cave and saw emptiness. The Buddha told Utpalavarṇā: 'Subhūti's seeing emptiness is seeing my dharmakāya.' The Shared teaching specifically takes true wisdom united with the principle of dharma-nature as the dharmakāya. Sometimes it simply refers to the true principle of partial emptiness, as the Dàpǐn says: 'You should contemplate emptiness; the empty dharma is the Buddha, because emptiness has neither coming nor going.' The Distinct teaching specifically takes the Middle Way as the Buddha's dharmakāya, and merit and wisdom as the saṃbhogakāya; because the dharma and retribution are united, there is then the nirmāṇakāya. The Complete teaching differs only in manifesting the dharmakāya as non-severance.
