> "If Subhūti \[...\] without \[the state of\] freedom from difficulty": first, rebuking the delusion of views. Speaking of 'heterodox views': what kind of views are these? If the Middle Way is combined into the two truths, and the ultimate truth is combined with the conventional, it is still the view of existence. If one establishes the three truths, it is subsumed separately under the view of non-existence. Therefore, the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says: 'Worldly beings have existence, the two vehicles have non-existence, and the person of the bodhisattva has neither existence nor non-existence.' Why so? Worldly beings do not see the Middle Way, give rise to the sixty-two views, and transmigrate through the twenty-five states of existence; they are subsumed under the view of existence. The two vehicles do not see the Middle Way, sever the sixty-two views, and enter emptiness; they are subsumed under the view of non-existence. Emptiness contrasted with saṃsāra is still the two extremes; neither enters the Middle. If one speaks concessively, one may grant that they have crossed over to the other shore of the delusion of views within the three realms; but speaking critically, this is precisely the delusion of views outside the realms—how could they have reached the other shore of views? Because they are confused about the Middle, their view of emptiness remains unmoving, and they do not cultivate the effortless branches of the path; how could they reach the other shore of distinctive views? Therefore, he has not slain the thieves.
