> Question: Since Subhūti practiced contemplation, refining, perfuming, and cultivating to attain the samādhi of non-contention, and ordinary beings do not have this, why is it said that they also attain this samādhi? Answer: Contemplation, refining, perfuming, and cultivating are all based on the root \[dhyānas\]; here it is just raised broadly to interrogate him by saying they all attain it. Furthermore, the six heterodox masters and the like all attained deep dhyāna and possessed minds of benevolence; rising from their dhyāna, their minds harbored no divergent thoughts whether smeared with sandalwood or slashed with a knife. How does this differ from Subhūti's non-contention?
