> From "If by non-arising" onward, second, the approach of non-arising. The reason for taking up this approach is to rebuke those who adopt the common, distinct, and perfect approaches of the Mahāyāna while missing their true intent, yearning for the fruit while practicing the cause and seeking a prophecy of non-arising, causing their minds to stir falsely and obstructing their entry into the correct path. Why? In all three teachings, one receives a prophecy upon perceiving non-arising. As the Śūraṅgama states, there are four prophecies: first, the prophecy before generating the aspiration; second, the secret prophecy; third, the prophecy in person; fourth, the prophecy upon perceiving non-arising. The Tripiṭaka \[practitioner\] subdues defilements but has no prophecy of non-arising; he only obtains the first three. As for the prophecy before generating the aspiration: although one is completely bound, or this is an expedient means for the two vehicles, if one has the capacity for the Mahāyāna in the three teachings, even though not yet able to generate the aspiration, a prophecy is conferred on them, just as the Buddha conferred prophecies on the pigeon and the sparrow beside the Jetavana Grove. As for the secret prophecy: nominal bodhisattvas and bodhisattvas of the stage of subduing patience and dry wisdom mostly receive secret prophecies; bodhisattvas of conforming patience and the stage of nature all receive prophecies in person.
