> Regarding "essentials of the Dharma": because the five practices summarize the essential destination of the myriad practices and are supreme for entering the Way, they are called the essentials of the Dharma. Why? These sixteen practices subsume all practices. Now taking these four: the four practices under suffering, when comprehensively observing the applications of mindfulness, can generate the dharma of heat, which is the semblance path. Reaching supreme patience and the foremost worldly dharma, according to whichever single practice one employs, one can enter the patience of suffering, which is the true path. The undertaking of entering the Way is complete; hence they are called the essentials of the Dharma. Furthermore, these five practices are the three Dharma seals that seal the śrāvaka sūtras. Why? Suffering combined with impermanence, emptiness combined with non-self, together with quiescence, are the three Dharma seals; hence they are called the essentials of the Dharma. Furthermore, these five practices are the three gates of liberation: emptiness and non-self are emptiness; quiescence and nirvāṇa are signlessness; impermanence and suffering are wishlessness. These three gates of liberation subsume all dharmas; hence they are called the essentials of the Dharma.
