> "I then... up to... benefits of": second, Rāhula explains to them. A master says: It is like the Sūtra of the Wise and the Foolish explaining the measurement of the merit of helping someone leave home. We now say this is not so: the sons of elders asked Rāhula about the merit of leaving home; how could it be discussing how much merit is gained by helping someone leave home? Rather, it was explaining that leaving home in the Tripiṭaka attains the ten wisdoms, the three samādhis, the three clarities and six superknowledges, the eight liberations, and so forth, departing from birth and death and attaining the supramundane merits of the two nirvāṇas and the like—how could it be the same as a wheel-turning king's boundless wandering in birth and death?
