問何以通別以緣修為自、圓教以真修為自？答：通別用智成佛，如但是境，故緣是自。圓用真成佛，緣修但是福慧莊嚴，故真如為自。

> Question: Why is it that the Common and Distinct \[teachings\] take conditioned cultivation as self, while the Perfect Teaching takes true cultivation as self? Answer: In the Common and Distinct \[teachings\], one becomes a buddha by using wisdom, and suchness is merely the cognitive object; therefore, the conditioned is self. The Perfect \[Teaching\] accomplishes buddhahood by using truth, and conditioned cultivation is merely the adornment of merit and wisdom; therefore, true suchness is self.
