> Question: How could using merely a single round cause those clinging to the three teachings each to hear differently and each to relinquish what they grasp? Answer: Formerly, upon returning to Shaan county, I saw that at Daoyin Monastery, Master Zhang had painted an icon of Rocana on the north wall of the main hall for Emperor Xuan of the Liang, and also painted a tortoise. As people moved or stood still, both eyes of the image entirely followed and looked at them, and the tortoise's eyes did likewise. If mundane physical phenomena can be wonderful to such an extent, how much more so with Vimalakīrti abiding in the wonderful wisdom of the inconceivable! A refutation in a single round causes the three each to shatter the fault of their grasping mind and voluntarily relinquish it.
