> From "He said to Śāriputra..." below: second, speaking to Śāriputra about the matters worthy of praise. This further has four parts: 1. the Hinayana hearing it cannot understand; 2. urging the wise to resolve their minds; 3. reproaching himself that the śrāvakas have no share; 4. celebrating that bodhisattvas attain benefit. As for the first part: because the Hinayana followers lack the Mahāyāna three uncontaminated faculties, although they hear it they do not understand. Kāśyapa himself sets up the metaphor of blindness to clarify this meaning, which has two parts: 1. setting up the metaphor; 2. applying the metaphor. Regarding "displaying visible forms before a blind person": although the blind do not see, it is not that they do not hear of forms. This compares the two vehicles lacking the Mahāyāna three uncontaminated faculties: hearing the supernormal power explained, since they do not see the principle, they do not know the intent or reasons behind the supernormal function. Just as a blind person does not see forms, and though hearing different descriptions, does not know their origin; therefore it says, "their inability to understand is just like this." Why? Although the two vehicles have attained the wisdom eye, because of grasping realization their faculty of the Dharma eye is damaged. Although they again hear it explained, they cannot give rise to the consciousness to see these events. Just as a blind person in the world has damaged physical eye faculties, and though facing various visible forms, cannot give rise to the consciousness to see anything.
