- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [8.23](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1778.8.23)

> From "Mañjuśrī... to shared with them" next asks about practicing compassion: first the question, and second the answer. First, as for the question: having heard about practicing loving-kindness, contemplating sentient beings, entering emptiness, and seeing the Middle Way, how is it with compassion? Hence the question follows. Second, as for Vimalakīrti's answer: if loving-kindness is bestowing bliss and compassion is uprooting suffering, simply taking the merits cultivated through this conditionless loving-kindness, all are also conditionlessly shared with sentient beings, causing them to attain the supreme bliss of the Middle Way, which is named loving-kindness; loving-kindness is compassion. Moreover, uprooting their attachment to the two extremes and freeing them from the suffering of the two kinds of birth-and-death is named compassion.
